All that fuel could run a Geo Metro for a solid week!

They don’t have injectors. They just stuff a hose in there.

That’s insane. That’s probably more than my cars engine capacity of fuel in each cylinder per run.

Yeah, I was astonished the first time I saw that video.
This puts it in an interesting context:
http://www.harwoodandassociates.co.uk/faqs/guidance-…
A typical bath tap has about 10-15 litres per minute flow rate - 15l/m would be a good, powerful one, 10l/m a bit weak. The top fuel dragster’s cylinders each have peak flow of 45 litres per minute.
To offset against that, though, the fuel used is only about half as energy-dense as petrol. Even so, that’s a metric fuckton being pumped through there.

I think its something like 15 gallons nitro-meth in a quarter mile. Crazy to actually see that.

Crazy. Makes me think of the 12-15 liters a second the old F1 fuel rigs could flow.*

Well you gotta think, during the run that single cylinder produces more power than a Bugatti Veyron.

Then again, a Veyron will keep producing its relatively puny output for rather longer.

That’s an insane way to put it. I’ve never thought about that before. Top fuel dragsters are mind blowing.

I saw at a science museum years back. Very cool. Its astonishing how much fuel is consumed

also that the engines are sometime one run and done. they rebuild them at the trailer. its insane

I met Antron Brown a while back with some friend, and as engineers we had all sorts of questions and learned a ton about top fuel dragsters - they really are mind blowing. 500CI engines with a hemispherical head and flat-top piston & a blower that take ~800HP to run? Insane.
Also if you ever get the change to see them run in person, do it. I went to the NHRA nationals about a year ago and it was definitely a worth-while experience, even if you’re not that in to drag racing.
